GailStamlerOctober 19, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street  – "History of Midwifery in New Mexico"

Gail Stamler will present the history of the traditional midwives of New Mexico, the important role they played in improving health care for the women and children of New Mexico, and how their legacy continues today.

"The "curandera-parteras" were trained in an apprenticeship model and were the trusted healthcare providers for most of the rural areas of New Mexico. Health outcomes were poor for women and infants due to low family incomes, long distances to hospitals, poor sanitation, and large families with inadequate nutrition for mothers. Infant and maternal mortality rates were higher than the rest of the nation," Stamler said.

"The "parteras" were instrumental in improving the care of the mothers who were giving birth in these rural communities. Midwives continue to play a large role in the health of New Mexican families today and have carried on the important work of the "parteras" from the past," she continued.

Gail Stamler served as a midwife in Grant County for 40 years before retiring in 2022. In the early days of her career, Stamler was a licensed midwife, helping women reclaim the birth process and deliver their babies at home. She then completed her nursing degree at WNMU and became a certified nurse-midwife at San Jose State University. Stamler is also a member of the Gila Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees, where she advocates for improved community healthcare policies and access to care.

Children are welcome to participate on any Sunday, but they will get the most out of the program if they attend second and fourth Sundays somewhat regularly. Family adults may stay for the children's program or attend the adult program. Children are encouraged to bring a small item that represents someone or something they are grateful for that week.

There are speakers on the patio if you wish to enjoy the service outside.
