EmilyAversaJanuary 19, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "The Hearth"

Emily Aversa, the Community Engagement Administrator for The Hearth, will speak about this new nonprofit's mission and vision and will describe how area residents are invited to participate in shaping it. She will also lead a discussion on the role of community spaces and their potential to counterbalance the epidemic of loneliness and disconnection that many are experiencing at this time.

The Hearth is housed in the former First Presbyterian Church on Swan Street in Silver City. The Presbytery of the Southwest continues to own the building, but has given it to the leadership group for use and stewardship because they believe in the mission. The group seeks to provide rest, restoration, and reconnection for all who are weary. This involves partnering with local groups who share Hearth values, which include abundance, rest, community, collaboration, transparency, and acceptance of all people regardless of identities.

"Spaces of various sizes are available for workshops, meetings, musical performances, fundraisers, social and family gatherings, and day-long retreats. We also rent two offices, which are currently occupied. The funds raised from events and rentals pay the utility bills and also go toward the future goal of preparing rooms for overnight retreats for people who are feeling depleted from their work for humanitarian and environmental well-being. See our website, www.hearthnm.org , or follow us on Facebook (thehearthsilvercity) to stay up to date on upcoming events," Aversa said.

Emily Aversa has happily called Silver City, New Mexico home since 2005. She is a mother as well as an educator, and has taught children ages five to 15 in Silver City and Gallup, NM and in a holistic arts-based international school. After 24 years in the classroom, she is taking a sabbatical from teaching, but plans to return. At present, she owns and operates downtown independent book and record store Avalon Books & Music, and is the Community Engagement Administrator for The Hearth. Co-incidentally, her last name is connected to the Etruscan word for "hearth keeper." In her free time, Aversa reads widely, enjoys diverse musical artists and styles, and spends time with family and friends.

Children are welcome to participate on any Sunday, but they will get the most out of the program if they attend second and fourth Sundays somewhat regularly. Family adults may stay for the children's program or attend the adult program. Children are encouraged to bring a small item that represents someone or something they are grateful for that week.

UUFSC Safety Protocol as pursuant to our most recent UUA Guidelines:

Masks are now optional, but their use is encouraged. We will continue to serve refreshments on the patio and in the building. Visitors are always welcome.
