Visitors are advised to wear blaze orange or other brightly colored clothing

SILVER CITY, NM, Sept. 26, 2024 – Hunting season is here! On Saturday, September 28, youth-only deer and elk rifle hunts will begin in the Fort Bayard area within Game Management Unit 24. Trail users are advised to wear blaze orange or other brightly colored clothing to increase your visibility while in the hiking, biking, or horseback riding in the area.

"While hunting occurs throughout the Gila National Forest, the concentration of trails in the Fort Bayard area demands an extra measure of caution," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "We recommend wearing bright colors to help ensure everyone stays safe when out and about this hunting season."

Youth deer and elk hunting seasons in the Fort Bayard area are open during the following dates:
Sept. 28 to October 6
Oct. 5 to Oct. 9
Oct. 19 to Oct. 23
November 23 to December 1

While fire danger is currently moderate, visitors should exercise caution with fire. Campfires must be fully extinguished when not attended. Use copious water to drown your coals and use a shovel to stir. Use the back of your hand to feel for heat, adding more water and stirring again until coals are cool to the touch.
