SANTA FE, NM – During the New Mexico Counties (NMC) Board of Directors meeting on Friday, May 3, 2024, in Silver City, the Board elected Gerard Saiz, who is a Valencia County Commissioner, to fill the vacant position on the National Association of Counties (NACo) Board representing New Mexico at the national level. Commissioner Saiz assumed his responsibilities upon adjournment of the Board meeting. Since NMC is a 100% state, which means all 33 counties are members of NACo, it is allowed a second board representative. Harding County Assessor, Phillip Trujillo, also serves as a NACo Board representative. Both individuals were chosen by their peer-elected officials as ideal candidates to represent all 33 counties in New Mexico. Commissioner Saiz will serve the remaining term through June 2025, fulfilling Jhonathan Aragon's term, who stepped down to become the Valencia County Deputy Manager.
NACo serves nearly 40,000 county elected officials and 3.6 million county employees. Founded in 1935, NACo unites county officials to: advocate county priorities in federal policymaking, promote exemplary county policies and practices, nurture leadership skills and expand knowledge networks, optimize county and taxpayer resources and cost savings, and enrich the public's understanding of county government.
