ALBUQUERQUE, NM, June 28, 2024 Fire crews are responding to a lightning fire start within the Sandia Mountain Wilderness on the Sandia Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands. The fire was first reported yesterday evening during a thunderstorm weather system. Yesterday evening, NM Forestry Division Bernalillo District responded and disengaged due to firefighter safety of threatening weather to access the location. The location has been identified on US Forest Service (USFS) land within the Sandia Mountain Wilderness.

Cause: Lightning.
Size: .10 acre
Location: Sandia Mountain Wilderness south of Placitas in the north area of the Sandia Ranger District on the Cibola National Forest within Sandoval County, New Mexico.
Responding Resources: USFS Engines 652, 651 and 6123. Additional resources have been ordered to include a type 2 helicopter with repel unit.
Containment: 0%
Values at risk: At this time, the fire is not a threat to any communities, and there are no evacuations in effect.
Fuels: Mixed Conifer.
Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of Placitas and Bernalillo.
Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the highest priority. Please avoid the area while crews conduct fire operations.
Drones pose a serious risk to firefighting and can cause air operations to cease.
