The July 4th Tailgate event at the Museum of Space History typically scheduled in conjunction with the City of Alamogordo's annual fireworks display has been cancelled. The International Space Hall of Fame Foundation, which hosts the event at the museum, stands with the decision made by the City Commission to postpone the fireworks show until a later date. 

"In light of the recent devastating fires in our neighboring communities of Ruidoso and Mescalero, and the heroic efforts of area firefighters to assist, the Foundation supports the decision to postpone the annual July 4th fireworks show to a later date," said Foundation Chairman Cliff Hudson. "We encourage everyone to celebrate July 4th safely and to be aware of the dry conditions." The City of Alamogordo has not made a decision as to when the fireworks show will be postponed to, but are considering moving it to an event later in the year. 

"Museum members have enjoyed a front row seat to the annual fireworks show for 45 years, this would have been the 46th. The support from the City and the Fire Department, along with groups from around the area, has made the event both safe and successful for all these years and our goal is to continue that," said Foundation President Johnny Powell. "We strongly support our local fire department, and all the firefighters and emergency personnel who have made such a valiant effort to help with the South Fork and Salt Fires in the Ruidoso area. Their task is not finished and we understand the strain on resources this has created."

Attending the July 4th Tailgate event is a benefit of museum membership. "We believe our members understand why this decision was made. As members, they have already shown their community support. We look forward to continuing this tradition in a safe and responsible manner next year," said Powell.

The International Space Hall of Fame Foundation (ISHFF) is a 501(c)3, non-profit corporation whose purpose is to receive and administer funds for scientific, educational, and charitable purposes including providing philanthropic support to the New Mexico Museum of Space History and its programs.
