(Albuquerque, NM) — Mylar balloons can be a fun way to celebrate a loved one's graduation from high school or college. But it's not fun to experience a power outage caused by one of these metallic balloons.
As graduation season approaches, PNM is reminding customers about some important safety tips if they choose to gift a graduate with a Mylar balloon.
Mylar balloons, popular for their shiny metallic appearance and festive designs, can cause power outages and pose dangers when released outdoors. The conductive material of the balloons can easily become entangled in power lines, transformers and other electrical equipment. This can cause outages, property damage and potentially dangerous situations for our customers and the public.
If you choose to include Mylar balloons in your graduation celebration, please follow these important safety tips:
â—Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Securely Tie Balloons:Â Always securely tie Mylar balloons to a weight heavy enough to prevent them from floating away.
â—Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Indoor Use Only:Â Keep Mylar balloons indoors or securely anchored if used outdoors to prevent them from drifting into power lines.
â—Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Proper Disposal:Â After your graduation celebration is over, properly deflate and dispose of Mylar balloons in the trash.
If you see a Mylar balloon come in contact with power lines, please stay away and report it to PNM at 888-DIAL-PNM. For more electrical safety tips, visit PNM.com/safety.
