SANTA FE – The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission Planning Program seeks public input on the Water Security Planning Act Discussion Draft Rule and Guidelines through February 21.

The public can provide input at www.MainStreamNM.org/get-involved/  on the Discussion Draft, which outlines a proposed framework for regional water planning, including new boundaries, governance structures, and strategies for incorporating public welfare considerations. Planning Program staff are hosting virtual events to answer questions—event details are available at the link.

"New Mexicans' voices are at the heart of regional water planning and the Discussion Draft not only captures public sentiment but also lays the groundwork for data-driven, regionally tailored solutions that balance our state's diverse water needs," said Water Planning Program Manager Andrew Erdmann.

Providing input on the Discussion Draft gives the public ample opportunity to make their voices heard ahead of the formal rule promulgation process, which follows a more rigid schedule and comment period.

NMISC will begin formal rule promulgation and guideline adoption under the 2023 Water Security Planning Act later this spring, and the final rules and guidelines are expected to be completed later in 2025.

The 2023 Water Security Planning Act is New Mexico's guiding legislation for regional water planning with a goal to secure a resilient water future. It creates a roadmap for regionalized water planning and implementation that prioritizes local communities' unique needs, makes use of the best available science and data, and maintains compliance with federal and state laws.
