Santa Fe, NM – The New Mexico Association of Non-Public Schools (NMANS) is pleased to announce a special Legislative Breakfast for non-public school leaders, set for Friday, February 21, 2025, at 8:00 AM at the New Mexico State Capitol. The event aims to provide a unique opportunity for non-public school leaders to learn about the legislative process and foster stronger relationships with state lawmakers.

In a recent survey, heads of non-public schools expressed a lack of personal connections with their district representatives and senators, as well as a limited understanding of how state legislation affects their schools. In response, NMANS is hosting this event to bridge that gap, with hopes to make the Legislative Breakfast an annual event during the legislative session.

"Building relationships between non-public schools and legislators is key to ensuring that schools can continue to provide high-quality, diverse educational options," said Bob, Executive Director of NMANS. "This breakfast will be an important opportunity for non-public school leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the legislative process and to advocate for policies that support their students and communities."

New Mexico is home to a diverse range of non-public schools that serve students from various backgrounds, including rural and low-income communities. Many of these schools have been pillars in their communities for over a century, while others are emerging to meet the evolving needs of New Mexico's students.

Because of their smaller class sizes and curricular autonomy, many non-public schools are often able to creatively meet the academic and social emotional needs of their students in unique ways.

"As New Mexico's non-public schools continue to serve the diverse needs of students, it is crucial that these schools are able to thrive in a supportive legislative environment," said Bob. "This event will be a step toward ensuring that non-public schools are well-represented and understood in the policymaking process."
