Portales, NM – March 25, 2025 – The ENMU Department of Music presents the opera "L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love) on Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building on the Eastern New Mexico University campus.
"The Elixir of Love is one of the most famous and oft-performed operas in the world and for a good reason; the music is catchy and virtuosic, and the story is funny, relatable, and heartwarming," said Dr. Stephanie Beinlich, assistant professor of voice and stage director. "A cast of outlandish and endearing friends balances the romantic and earnest leads at the center of our story. This full-length Italian opera is a massive undertaking for the cast and production team of the Department of Music, and we know you will enjoy their efforts!"
"The Elixir of Love" tells the story of a poor young man, Nemorino, who is deeply in love with a wealthy woman, Adina, and buys a supposed "love potion" from a traveling quack doctor (Dulcamara) to win her affection, only to realize the potion is fake and his genuine love is what truly captures her heart; the plot unfolds with comedic misunderstandings and ultimately celebrates the power of true love over magic potions. Set on an extravagant yacht in the 1960s, join us for a fun and romantic romp at sea.
"The Elixir of Love" has been featured in operas worldwide, including the Rome Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. Famous opera singers from all different backgrounds have starred in "The Elixir of Love," including Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, Enrico Caruso, and more recently, Inva Mula and Ramón Vargas.
