Students with New Mexico State University's Aggie Fashion Club are ready to book it to the runway and show off their unique fashion skills once again at their annual Sustainable Fashion Show. Â
The event is set to take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the Aggie Lounge in Corbett Center Student Union. Â
This year, the upcycled and recycled designs are inspired by literature, with the theme being "Book it to the Runway!" One of the main purposes of the fashion show is to continue making a positive impact on the environment and create more sustainability. Â
"The fashion industry has a history of neglecting the environment with the increase of fast fashion, which creates large amounts of waste that end up in landfills," said Maxine Lucero, fashion merchandising and design program assistant in Family & Consumer Sciences. "This is a great concern to our students. They have found creative ways to upcycle and recycle materials and clothing for new and innovative designs." Â
Some of the designs that will be featured are made of chip bags, curtains, upcycled dresses, upcycled denim, pillowcases, playing cards, trash bags, electric cables, sketch book paper, yarn, and more. Â
"There will be around 40 NMSU students involved in the fashion show. Over 20 of those students have submitted a design and around 20 students will be modeling them," said Lucero. Â
The event will also feature live music, a photo booth, free flowers, and senior recognitions. It is free to the public with limited seating. Â
