ALBUQUERQUE, APRIL 10, 2025—This afternoon, MLG-appointed Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman announced his run for governor as a Democrat in the 2026 election. With crime continuing to top the list of concerns for New Mexicans, the Republican Party of New Mexico is sounding the alarm on Bregman's failed record on public safety.
"Sam Bregman has thrown his hat in the ring for governor, but voters should take a hard look at his track record as DA," said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Amy Barela. "Under Bregman's soft-on-crime leadership, violent offenders are back on the streets faster than police can re-arrest them. Even Albuquerque's own sheriff has said the system isn't working—and Bregman is at the center of that failure."
Barela continued, "Bregman has proven that he's not serious about public safety. Crime has skyrocketed under his watch, and the people of Bernalillo County are paying the price. If this is the kind of leadership he wants to bring to the governor's office, New Mexicans should be deeply concerned."
"From Sam Bregman to Deb Haaland, Democrats keep putting politics ahead of public safety, and New Mexicans continue to suffer for it. It's time to break the cycle. It's time for Republican leadership that will prioritize safe streets, strong communities, and real accountability."
