Hanukkah, the eight-night Jewish festival of lights, commemorates the rededication of the temple in Israel. This holiday is marked by miracles. The Maccabees were a Jewish family who bravely fought against Antiochus, a Greek tyrant, and his army. Antiochus tortured and killed Jews for practicing their faith and defiled their holy temple.
Despite being severely outnumbered, the Maccabees achieved victory over Antiochus with God's help. To celebrate their triumph, they lit the menorah in the temple, and miraculously, the oil lasted for eight nights, even though there was only enough oil for one.
Hanukkah represents Jewish determination and perseverance in the face of persecution. As Jewish families gather to light the candles on the hanukkiah this year, the story of Hanukkah will resonate deeply, especially as antisemitism reaches record highs in America and around the world.
The Republican Party of New Mexico will always stand with our Jewish friends in New Mexico, Israel, and around the world, and we wish you a safe and Happy Hanukkah!
