Santa Fe, NM — Yesterday, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed onto a joint statement issued by the Democratic Governors Association that condemned actions taken by President Donald Trump to restore law and order to the streets of Los Angeles, California. Demonstrations there, in protest of legal law enforcement operations, quickly turned violent leading to the assault of several law enforcement officers and the destruction of both public and private property. The President deployed the National Guard in the absence of leadership from local elected officials who viewed the violent protests as 'peaceful.'
In response, Senate Republican Leader Bill Sharer (R-Farmington) has issued the following statement:
"We condemn Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's decision to oppose the restoration of law and order. The Governor, who deployed the New Mexico National Guard herself to intervene in crime-ridden Albuquerque, has no business opposing similar actions taken by the President to improve public safety.
Instead of seeking to placate her radical base, the Governor should be collaborating with federal law enforcement agencies in order to make New Mexico a safer place. We fully support and encourage legal immigration into the United States and peaceful expression; unlike the Governor, we strongly condemn the violation of federal law and rioting."
