SANTA FE—On October 11, 2024, the Medical Assistance Division of New Mexico’s Health Care Authority Department issued a supplemental briefing advising New Mexico healthcare providers they will be reimbursed with state funds to facilitate “gender-affirming care”. This new practice is a result of House Bill 7 from 2023, a measure Senate Republicans unanimously voted against and which passed in the Senate 23-15.

Senate Republican Leader, Senator Greg Baca (R-Belen) has issued the following statement in response:

“It is unthinkable, yet inevitable that the passage of HB 7 would force the use of taxpayer dollars to provide gender-affirming care for children as young as 12. This is the result of a pervasive left-wing ideology that has overrun Santa Fe. We have repeatedly lost grounded legislators who stood on their values and for their constituencies. Instead, radical Democrats push out voices of reason and install progressives intent on squashing the voice of the traditional New Mexican. Unfortunately, our children will bear the consequences of the Democrat’s willingness to compromise on New Mexico values.”
