Albuquerque, NM — Yesterday, Republican lawmakers from the New Mexico House of Representatives and Senate convened for a public legislative task force hearing focused on improving public safety across the state. Lawmakers heard testimony from several law enforcement representatives including Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen and Former FBI Special Agent in Charge for New Mexico Raul Bujanda.

A common message from law enforcement agencies, state prosecutors, and policy experts from yesterday's testimony was centered around difficulty moving necessary legislation in New Mexico's Democrat-controlled Legislature. In light of this anticipated issue, State Senator Nicole Tobiassen (R-Albuquerque) is taking the initiative to organize every law enforcement entity in New Mexico –including federal agencies– to join in a 'Public Safety Day' of advocacy and awareness during the upcoming 2026 Regular Legislative Session in Santa Fe. Additionally, Senator Tobiassen is encouraging victim advocacy groups and business owners to participate as well.

Additionally, Senator Nicole Tobiassen (R-Albuquerque) has issued the following statement:

"I may be new to the legislature, but it is overwhelmingly obvious that in order to make real progress towards improving public safety, we must deploy outside-the-box approaches in order to motivate the Democrats who really run the Roundhouse." The Senator explained, "If that means asking every single law enforcement agency across New Mexico to come on the same day, so be it. Perhaps then, soft-on-crime Democrats that control key committees and floor votes will have the courage to work alongside Republicans and oftentimes the Governor's Office in order to pass legislation aimed at making our communities safer. If that doesn't work, at least lawmakers like Senator Joseph Cervantes will have to look the brave men and women who serve our communities in the eye when he stalls legislation they are begging us to pass."
