Albuquerque, NM — Today, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized the deployment of 60-70 New Mexico National Guard personnel to assist the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) in addressing the city's out-of-control crime crisis. This authorization is in response to an emergency request from APD Chief Harold Medina.
It represents yet another example of the state having to come to the rescue of the APD, such as when the Governor authorized an Albuquerque "blitz" by New Mexico State Police in 2020. Source: https://www.krqe.com/news/albuquerque-metro/nmsp-release-citation-numbers-in-30-day-blitz/
Senator Nicole Tobiassen (R-Albuquerque) has issued the following statement in response:
"Albuquerque's crime crisis and lawlessness is a testament to the absolute failure of Mayor Tim Keller and his progressive policies. It's sad that his own police chief had to go over his head and seek state resources in order to try and keep up with the rampant violent crime, drug trafficking, juvenile crime, and gang activity that plagues our city. Mayor Keller and the progressive democrats' failed leadership in the City of Albuquerque have made our community into a literal warzone and we must change course before not even state resources can combat the chaos allowed in Albuquerque. This plea for help comes on the heels of a legislative session where Democrat lawmakers denied or killed every single substantive public safety proposal. Elections have consequences and city residents have seen enough."
