Christopher Stuart Eng entered eternal rest on Sunday, September 22nd, 2024. During the course of his long and interesting life, he proudly served his country as a United States Marine, his community as a Mounted Patrol Officer, and his family as a generous husband, father, and grandfather.
After his service in the USMC, he used his GI bill to pursue a degree in history at the University of New Mexico, where he met his wife of 56 years, Joan Konopak. His degree led to a job with UNM, where he worked until shortly after his two sons, Nils and Eric were born. He moved the family to Silver City, NM and worked for many years as a foreman in the copper mines before re-entering university service at Western New Mexico University. In retirement, he worked at Foxworth Galbraith Lumber and became heavily involved in community service through various service organizations including the Juvenile Probation Office, the Boys and Girls Club, Masonic Charities, and the New Mexico Mounted Patrol, where he ended his career as Southwest District Captain.
A Massachusetts native, he fell in love with New Mexico as a child. He loved reading, exploring, and writing about the Southwest, a passion that continued through his entire life. He loved firearms, college football, and the Anglican Church. He had a mischievous sense of humor, a heart for the downtrodden, and was a deeply reflective and thoughtful man.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Eng, his two sons and their wives Barbara and Robin, and his four grandchildren Daniel and his wife Avery, Emma, Noah, and Jessen, of whom he was immensely proud.
In his last years, he and his wife Joan became the sole support for an orphanage in Uganda. It
was his wish that upon his passing, in lieu of flowers, donations would be made to the
orphanage in his memory. For those wishing to donate, please contact Joan Eng at
