Donald Russell Nevins, dad, granddad, great grandad, and husband extraordinaire, passed away peacefully at the age of 88, on January 17, 2025. The world may never know another such dedicated family man. He was proud of every member of his family, and his favorite topics always included the many accomplishments or escapades of his kids and grandkids.
Don was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1936, but he eventually made his way to the southwest, where he spent his 44-year career in mining with Phelps Dodge/Freeport-McMoran. That career began with a machinist apprenticeship, during which he won the apprentice of the year award. While his profession was expertly managing industrial power plants, his real power lay in the size of his heart. Nothing was more important to him than his wife and growing family, and his dedication to his friends was legendary. He was one of those guys you don't have to ask for help--they just show up.
Don is survived by the love of his life, his wife Margaret Winnifred Nevins of Gilbert, Arizona; daughters Cindy Nelson (David) of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Robin Short (Mike) also of Gilbert; grandsons Erik Nelson (Brandi), Jared Nelson, Justin Short (Emily), and Jeff Short (Meghan); great grandchildren Abigail Woods, Madeline Nelson, Leora Nelson, Jaxson Short, Wade Short, and Lizzy Short; sister Zoretta Lopez and sister-in-law Patricia Baker; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He also leaves behind his very dear friends--Rod Hawman, Peggy Balise, and Don Elkins.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his son Mike Nevins, and his sister Verla Cueto.
An outdoors man, Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, horseback riding, and traveling. He enjoyed moonlighting as a tax preparer at the Pearce Agency in Silver City, New Mexico. He loved a good book, and he changed with the times--hardbacks to e-books to audible books. His machinist mind served him well--he was a clever fixer of things and designer of solutions throughout his life. And he loved sharing a meal, a cup of coffee, or a donut with his many friends over the years.
A private inurnment will be held at the Memory Lane Rose Garden in Silver City, New Mexico, at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations in his name to Hospice of the Valley at 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix AZ 85014 or online at www.HOV.org.
The family thanks the wonderful hospice caregivers, especially the Lund Home, for their compassionate care.
Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory. Arrangements are pending with Terrazas Funeral Chapels and Crematory "Trusted care for the ones you love" ~ 575-537-0777. To send condolences, visit www.terrazasfuneralchapel.com.
