With deep sorrow and profound love, we announce the passing of our beloved brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, Fernando G. Villegas, lovingly known to many as Fernie or Chango. Fernie was born February 6, 1959 in El Paso, Texas. He passed away at his home in Arenas Valley on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and love that will never be forgotten. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels.
Fernie was a deeply loving and kind soul. Though life presented him with challenges, he never lost the compassion in his heart. His love for his family ran deep; he cared dearly for his many siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a steady presence, always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear, and he gave his love freely and without condition.
Fernie had a special connection with the outdoors. Not only being a green thumb and growing plants he was proud of, he found peace and "relaxation" in nature. He could often be found picking piñons—actually, he would make his own Piñon fest going on everywhere in his trailer; and then, package and send with a special note to each and every family member!
He was also a gifted artist with his hands, spending many hours crafting handmade jewelry. Each piece was unique, made with care, and given with love to those he cherished. Fernando was a talented construction worker as well—skilled and hardworking. He was also generous and gave extra time and consideration to teach and visit with anyone who wanted to learn, especially those he cared about most.
Known for his sense of humor, Chango was a natural jokester who brought smiles and laughter to any room. He was also a wonderful cook, always willing to share a meal with anyone who came by. No one ever left hungry—or without a story to tell. And if asked about him, many would add something fun and crazy!
Fernie was a giver in the truest sense of the word. He gave his time, his love, his talents, and his heart to everyone around him. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created and the love he gave will live on in all of us.
He is survived by his five sisters: Delilah Villegas, Dora Rodriguez (Raymundo), Zonya Vega (Richard), Eunice Ibarra (Gabriel), and Leticia Vazquez (Gabriel); three brothers: Ruben Villegas, Tony Baca (Kat), and Santiago Reyes (Ruth); Tia Selah and Tio Benny Bencomo; special friends whom he considered siblings: Juan Trujillo and Jackie Lovesee; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Fernando also shared a deep bond with his beloved pets, Blanca and Bobby, who brought him joy, companionship, and comfort throughout his life. They were not just pets, they were part of his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesus M. Villegas and Elena Gonzales Cisneros, and his brother Hector Villegas G., whom he proudly inherited his nickname from.
In his memory, please consider planting something in his honor, sharing a laugh, cooking a meal for someone in need, or simply extending kindness—just as Fernando always did.
