{{/_source.additionalInfo}}Santa Fe, NM — Today, the legislature's Facilities Review Subcommittee considered and approved the construction of a new single-occupancy, gender-neutral restroom on the fourth floor of the New Mexico State Capitol. This addition would not have been necessary if the capitol's progressive policies had not permitted biological males to use the existing women's restroom, leading to numerous complaints by female employees and lawmakers during this spring's legislative session. Furthermore, while this new facility is allegedly designed for those needing special accommodations, the failure of the legislative leadership to change its underlying policy ignores the legitimate concerns of women uncomfortable with men in their restroom.
Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) Chairwoman Amy Barela released the following statement in response to the final House passage of President Trump's One, Big, Beautiful Bill.
NEW MEXICO JULY 3 - Today marks a historic victory for every American—and especially for the hardworking families of New Mexico. President Trump and Republican leaders in Congress have delivered the America First promises they campaigned on; the largest middle-class tax cut in U.S. history, strong and permanent border security, and long-overdue cuts to wasteful federal spending riddled with fraud and abuse. This is bold, common-sense leadership in action.
Vow to Keep Fighting for New Mexicans
Santa Fe, N.M. - Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a federal budget bill that will kick over 100,000 New Mexicans off their healthcare and reduce food benefits for half a million people across the state. This legislation will make life harder and more expensive for working families throughout the country, all while giving massive tax breaks to the extremely wealthy and adding trillions to the national deficit.
New Mexico House Democrats issued the following statement in response:
Roswell, NM — Following a presentation to the NM Legislative Education Study Committee (LESC) on early literacy efforts in New Mexico schools, Senators Candy Spence Ezzell and Ant Thornton called for New Mexico to provide key interventions to students who are not yet reading at grade level.
One key intervention is the universal adoption of curriculum based in the science of reading, thus ensuring that students receive phonics instruction proven to teach them to read. Once this research-based reading approach is implemented statewide, the Senators then suggested that students still not reading at grade level by the end of the third grade be retained for another year of phonics instruction in Grade 3. When implemented together, these two interventions contributed to the remarkable growth by students in Mississippi over a ten year period, often referred to as the "Mississippi Miracle."
House Democrats on Layoffs at Sandia Labs
Albuquerque, N.M. - New Mexico House Democrats issued the following statement in response to news that Sandia National Laboratory plans to lay-off up to 510 employees this fall, amidst ongoing chaos in Washington, D.C.:
Santa Fe, N.M. - Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling that limits the ability of federal judges to block executive orders that violate the constitution and could potentially lead to the end of birthright citizenship in our country.
New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martínez (D-Albuquerque), Majority Floor Leader Reena Szczepanski (D-Santa Fe), Majority Whip Dayan Hochman-Vigil (D-Albuquerque), and Caucus Chair Raymundo Lara (D-Chamberino) issued the following statement in response:
Santa Fe, NM — Senate Conservation Committee will be hearing a package of bills that will decimate our state's vital oil & gas industry. The committee will be presented with four bills, first on the agenda is SB 4. This measure, if passed, would further disrupt our state's vital industries– especially oil and gas production– by tracking and limiting the emissions of virtually all activity in New Mexico. In response, the Republican Ranking Member, Senator Candy Ezzell, has issued the following statement:
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, JANUARY 14—The Republican Party of New Mexico is outraged by the recent vote of New Mexico's Democrat Representatives, who chose to abandon the rights and protections of women and girls by voting against the H.R. 28 - Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025. Today, Congress passed this critical legislation, which amends the 1972 Education Amendments to reinforce that Title IX in sports recognizes a person's sex based only on their birth biology and genetics.
With a narrow vote of 218-206, only two Democrats supported this vital legislation, while all three New Mexico Democrat Representatives—Melanie Stansbury (CD 1), Gabe Vasquez (CD 2), and Teresa Leger Fernandez (CD 3)—turned their backs on our state's female athletes and their safety.
