(Santa Fe, NM) They've gone to the moon and back to give their imaginations a journey. They've wandered way outback to corral ideas for script and screen. They've polished their scripts and run through their lines. At long last, the finalists for the Scholastic Screenwriting Competition and the winner of the New Mexico Girls Make Movies Grant will be presented at a red carpet affair, "Shooting Stars at the Governor's Mansion" to be held Friday April 21 at 5:30 PM, with ticket sales for the public starting at $45 and $75 for VIP. Ticket price includes libations, delectable appetizers, gourmet popcorn, and a paparazzi-lined red carpet. Ticket purchases also benefit the programs of the host organizations.
Two area non-profit organizations have joined forces to host this event: The New Mexico Film Foundation and The New Mexico Governor's Mansion Foundation
The Film Foundation, acting through its Tale Writers Screenwriting Program (headed by Bradd Hopkins) is providing the technical expertise to run a Scholastic Script Contest that was open to New Mexico high school and college students with cash prizes of $1000, $300, and $200 sponsored by the Governor's Mansion Foundation. The NM Governor's Mansion Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that keeps the beauty and legacy of the historic Mansion alive with tours and community outreach. The contest received over 30 entries in a contest themed on New Mexico history with a ten page length requirement. The three finalist's winning scripts will be presented in a Stage Read lead by local actors and judged by a panel of celebrity judges. Each will receive their prizes at the event.
The second contest is sponsored by New Mexico Girls Make Movies, headed by Jocelyn Jansons and Carrie McCarthy. Jansons, a previous winner of the New Mexico Film Foundation's George RR Martin script writing Grant, wanted to "pay it forward" by producing a contest in which the winner would receive a completed version of her film, with a production valued at $1000. The other girls in the contest are offered the opportunity to serve as cast and crew. The resulting film is the property of the winner, which can be used to help establish her career as a film maker.
Amenities available at the event include delectables from: Cornivore, Casa Nova Catering, Beestro, Jinja, Hotel Santa Fe, and others. Miss New Mexico will make an appearance, and members of UNM ROTC are volunteering to serve as parking valets. Photos from the red carpet will be available for purchase, so attendees are reminded to adorn themselves in "Film Festival Fancy" attire. A portion of ticket sale proceeds will benefit the education and outreach mission of the NM Governor's Mansion Foundation, as well as the programs of the NM Film Foundation.
The official state gubernatorial residence has a film history of its own, including nuptial celebrations for Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart under the administration of former Governor Bill Richardson. Guests at the event will be treated to a "stellar" event.
