February 1, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Silver City Street Outreach"
Brian Stengel will talk about Silver City Street Outreach (SCSO), a grassroots harm reduction and community wellness nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting unhoused and vulnerable residents of Grant County. Founded on principles of compassion, dignity, and recovery-oriented care, SCSO provides year-round outreach services, crisis intervention, and resource navigation for individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges.
The organization operates the Silver City Warming Center, a low-barrier, trauma-informed daytime drop-in shelter that offers a safe, inclusive, and supportive refuge during the coldest months of the year. Beyond basic survival needs, SCSO emphasizes community connection, peer support, and access to recovery and stabilization resources—bridging gaps between street-level realities and long-term wellness.
Brian J. Stengel, LSAA, CPSW, CSW, is a mental health counselor-in-training, harm reduction advocate, and community leader based in Silver City, New Mexico. Drawing from extensive lived experience with both homelessness and addiction, Stengel has dedicated his career to serving unhoused and marginalized populations through a blend of direct service, advocacy, and education.

Silver City, N.M. - The Haven Winter Center, which was operating at the former Silver City Recreation Center, has closed due to insufficient staffing and a lack of sustainable funding necessary to continue safe operations, announced Jacqui Olea, acting town manager.
"I want to thank all of the volunteers who've made such a tremendous effort to help people in need," Olea said. "We will be looking at options to upgrade the infrastructure in that building, but as of now we have no option but to close the doors until such a time that we can identify funds for sufficient staff and needed renovations, as well as volunteers."
