Western New Mexico University Business students are offering free income tax preparation. This free service is offered for people whose household income is $67,000 or less and for those who are 65 years or older.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will operate out of Watts Hall and will be available Monday through Thursday from February 5 until April 3. It will not operate March 10-14 due to Spring Break.
Those seeking assistance should bring a photo ID (driver's license, military identification card or passport), their Social Security card or ITIN, W-2s or 1099s from all employers, proof of applicable tax-deductible expenses, and a void check or bank account information.
The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (NMISC) and Water Trust Board (WTB) are pleased to announce the opening of the application period for the New Mexico Unit Fund Pilot Funding Cycle (Pilot Cycle) for water utilization projects in the southwest region of New Mexico that encompasses Catron, Grant, Hidalgo and Luna counties (Southwest Region).
Ray Goellner will be giving the first of a series of talks on dietary health supplements at the Rotary meeting on Tuesday 2/11/25. This will be a series of talks occurring approximately once a month for the next several months covering popular supplements, what they are indicated for, and their effectiveness.
Ray earned his BS and MS in Pharmacy from the Long Island University College of Pharmacy in NY, and his Doctorate from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy. He was a pharmacy director for 39 years in hospitals in NY, Arizona, and finally at Gila Regional Medical Center here in Silver City. He also holds a Fellowship in Healthcare Management from the Leonard Davis Institute of Heath Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has also given several talks in Japan on pharmacy practice and healthcare in the United States.

Closure prevents burn injuries and reignition due to deposit of new material
QUEMADO, NM, Feb. 5, 2025 – The Gila National Forest, Quemado Ranger District burned a year’s worth of accumulated slash last week at the Baca community slash disposal site, approximately 3 miles northeast of Quemado Lake. The site is temporarily closed while the ashes cool.
