MarianneSmithJuly 9, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street –

Marianne Smith of the Grant County Archeological Society will discuss the earlier inhabitants of Grant County. Her presentation will include pictures of Mimbres pottery and pictographs that can be found in our area.

Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Marianne Smith graduated from law school in 1985 and worked in the legal industry in California and Washington State for over 20 years. She ended her career in 2007 to cruise the Western Hemisphere with her husband aboard their 40-foot sailboat. Together they visited 11 countries by sea and logged over 23,000 ocean miles.

Smith became fascinated with the archaeology and cultural history she encountered during her international travels. Gradually reshaping her lifestyle of exploration from a sailboat to an RV based in Silver City, New Mexico, she joined the Grant County Archaeological Society in 2016 and now acts as their current president while managing the group's website and research library.

Gila National Forest reminds you: if you pack it in, pack it out!

Public land visitors owe a duty of care for the land.

SILVER CITY, NM, June 29, 2023 – As summer heats up, so has the volume of visitors to campgrounds, trails, and other areas of the forest. Annual visitation to the Gila National Forest is on the rise and is only expected to keep growing. Unfortunately, the increasing traffic appears to be leaving a trail of snack wrappers, used toilet paper, and other disgusting trash in its wake.

"I'm glad that people are getting out and enjoying the benefits of recreating in the forest," said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. "However, we each have a responsibility to pack out our own trash and whenever possible, that which was left behind by irresponsible users before us. Only in that way can we leave any wild places for future generations to enjoy."
