SANTA FE — Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness in Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) New Mexico has joined with the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions to improve the comprehensive and individualized college and career advising provided to high school students.
GEAR UP New Mexico, a division of the New Mexico Higher Education Department, is a federally funded program that aims to increase college and career readiness for seventh- to 12th-grade students.
Ruidoso – The state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM), the Village of Ruidoso, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Small Business Administration (SBA) will host a town hall for residents on Wednesday, August 28 at 7 p.m. at Ruidoso Middle School and on Zoom.
This town hall will provide an opportunity for fire and flood impacted residents to ask questions about recovery directly to subject matter experts.
New COVID-19 vaccine expected in New Mexico by early September
SANTA FE — The Biden-Harris administration announced last week the return of free COVID-19 tests for Americans, set to begin in late September. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the latest COVID-19 vaccine, expected to be available in New Mexico within the next two weeks.
SANTA FE – The state Supreme Court today set aside the first-degree murder and evidence tampering convictions of a Las Vegas man for the stabbing death of a 71-year-old man in the northern New Mexico community in 2019.
The Court also ruled that the defendant, Seig Isaac Chavez, could be retried without violating his constitutional protections against double jeopardy.
In a unanimous opinion, the Court concluded that an audio recording of a telephone call Chavez made from jail to his son should not have been admitted as evidence during his trial and the recording "significantly affected the verdicts."

White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) has posted an alert for Sunday, August 25, 2024. US 70 is scheduled to be blocked one time beginning at 9:20 P.M. This block will last approximately one hour, lifting around 10:20 P.M. The block will be located at BLUE Block (2 miles east of the Owen access road, near Mile Marker 172) and YELLOW Block (near White Sands National Park, mile marker 200). San Augustin Pass and Las Cruces gate are NOT affected by this block; however, Nike Avenue will be affected.
