Standing Women at 1pm on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14, 2023

To participate please join us at Whitewater Mesa Labyrinths, Glenwood, NM 88039

The women of Ohio call upon the women of the world to stand with them in support of a better world for all children and the seven generations beyond them. Last May hundreds of thousands of women and those whom they love, on all continents of the world, stood together in parks, on beaches, in churches, at graduation ceremonies, in their backyards and at school yards or any place they could find to stand in a global wave of humanity. “We dream of a world where all children have safe drinking water, clean air to breathe, and enough food to eat. A world where they have access to a basic education to develop their minds and healthcare to nurture their growing bodies. A world where they have a warm, safe and loving place to call home. A world where they don't live in fear of violence - in their home, in their neighborhood, in their school or in their world. This is the world of which we dream. This is the cause for which we stand.”

Gila National Forest hosts ponderosa pine regeneration presentations

Public invited to join lunch and learn presentations from PhD student Kevin Willson

SILVER CITY, NM, April 11, 2023 – The Gila National Forest will host two “lunch and learn” events April 18 and 19, featuring Kevin Willson, who will discuss his research into ponderosa pine regeneration following high-severity fire. His study examines how wind, slope, and residual live trees affect recovery of ponderosa pine stands in fire scars.

Kevin Willson is a PhD student in the Hurteau Earth Systems Ecology Lab at the University of New Mexico. He is studying the effects of fire in ponderosa pine ecosystems. His research examines large, high severity burn patches on the Gila National Forest to explore how different factors influence ponderosa pine regeneration. He sampled multiple high severity burn patches in the Bonner, Divide, Glass, Shelly, and Torres fire footprints to better understand how prevailing wind direction, slope, and relative position of lives trees influence the density of forest regeneration.

Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District continues Pinos Altos prescribed burn

Introduction of low-severity fire removes ladder fuels to reduce risk of high-severity fire

SILVER CITY, NM, April 10, 2023 – The Silver City Ranger is planning to continue ignitions on the Pinos Altos Prescribed Fire project that began last week. Tomorrow, one day of ignition is planned on 12 acres of National Forest System lands in the Bear Creek drainage north of Pinos Altos, New Mexico.

The project area is adjacent to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and trail guards will monitor trail traffic, allowing hikers through when conditions are safe. The trail remains open; however, visitors can expect short delays to accommodate firing activities. The Bear Creek Road will be temporarily closed at the forest boundary and the Continental Divide Trail parking area on Bear Creek Road will also be closed to allow firefighters access and to protect public safety.

“Fuel conditions are conducive to meeting fire-use objectives and fire managers will continue to monitor weather closely to ensure it meets the parameters of the burn plan,” said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney.
