Dedicated Legislator, Defender of Independents, & Protector of State Budget
The Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico (IPANM) offers our sincere condolences on the loss of New Mexico State Senator John Arthur Smith, former Chair of the Legislative Finance Committee.
In reaction to the sad news, IPANM Executive Director Jim Winchester released the following statement:
(Santa Fe, NM) - I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend John Arthur Smith, one of New Mexico's most dedicated and consequential public servants and leaders, and an individual of great wisdom, skill and integrity.
As a state senator and Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, he fought hard to ensure New Mexico's long-term financial well-being in the face of difficult economic times and volatile revenues. John Arthur Smith always understood that the Land Grant Permanent Fund was the key to delivering critical services for the state's future, and that it must be protected for use in unforeseeable rainy days ahead. He was a rare leader who commanded bipartisan trust and respect on all matters related to the state's budget, including from many of those who frequently disagreed with him.

Helping our nonprofit customers lower their electric costs
Recently, PNM Resources Foundation announced the 44 New Mexico nonprofit recipients of the Reduce Your Use Grant. These grants help our nonprofit customers focus on spending less on electric costs and more on providing important assistance in the communities they serve.
The PNM Resources Foundation provides more than $1 million in grants each year to programs supporting several organizations that offer essential services throughout the state.
SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued the following statement Monday on the passing of Senator John Arthur Smith
“Today, I join New Mexicans in mourning the loss of Sen. John Arthur Smith, an extraordinary public servant and a cherished colleague and mentor of mine and many other public servants in our state.
ALBUQUERQUE, OCTOBER 7—The Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce issued the following statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the news of John Arthur Smith's passing. John Arthur Smith dedicated over three decades of service in the New Mexico Senate. While we may not have aligned with all of his positions, Senator Smith consistently sought to find common ground on what unites us, rather than divides us, a quality often absent in today's political climate. In the Senate, he prioritized fiscal responsibility as a steward of New Mexicans' tax dollars and demonstrated courage in opposing his own party when it did not serve the best interests of his constituents. The Republican Party of New Mexico extends our heartfelt condolences to John Arthur Smith's family and loved ones as we acknowledge and honor his contributions to our state."
