SANTA FE – This week, Senate Republicans and community leaders from New Mexico traveled to Eagle Pass and Del Rio, Texas for a high-level meeting with representatives from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Governor Greg Abbott's Office, the Texas Border Czar, the Texas Military Department, and the Texas Facilities Commission. The multi-agency delegation examined collaborative efforts that have resulted in a substantial reduction in illegal border crossings, drug smuggling, human and child trafficking, and related fatalities.Â

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (N.M.) is cosponsoring two bipartisan bills, both led by U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-Mich.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas), to strengthen border security at ports of entry:Â
The Securing America's Ports of Entry Act would fully staff America's airports, seaports, and land ports of entry by requiring U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to hire at least 600 additional officers a year within the Office of Field Operations (OFO) until the agency's staffing needs are met. Â
The July 4th Tailgate event at the Museum of Space History typically scheduled in conjunction with the City of Alamogordo's annual fireworks display has been cancelled. The International Space Hall of Fame Foundation, which hosts the event at the museum, stands with the decision made by the City Commission to postpone the fireworks show until a later date.Â
"In light of the recent devastating fires in our neighboring communities of Ruidoso and Mescalero, and the heroic efforts of area firefighters to assist, the Foundation supports the decision to postpone the annual July 4th fireworks show to a later date," said Foundation Chairman Cliff Hudson. "We encourage everyone to celebrate July 4th safely and to be aware of the dry conditions." The City of Alamogordo has not made a decision as to when the fireworks show will be postponed to, but are considering moving it to an event later in the year.Â

Washington The Bureau of Land Management closed on the sale of the Federal Helium System, fulfilling one of BLM's primary responsibilities under the Helium Stewardship Act of 2013. BLM will continue working with the new owner, Messer, during a 45-day hand-off period to support a smooth transition from federal to private ownership.
The Helium Stewardship Act of 2013 set forth the process requiring BLM to dispose of all federal helium assets. Public bidding for the helium system occurred in January 2024, with the top bid placed by Messer.
