NMSU to host Learn-A-Palooza March 2

A popular springtime event once hosted by New Mexico State University’s STEM Outreach Center has evolved into NMSU Learn-A-Palooza, a multi-disciplinary block party designed to educate families on what NMSU has to offer their children, and engage them in activities related to science, technology, engineering, art, math, health and more.

NMSU’s College of Health, Education and Social Transformation will host the event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 2 along with the STEM Outreach Center, the NMSU Provost’s Office, the NMSU Library and the NMSU College of Arts and Sciences.

Heinrich Leads Bipartisan Letter to FDA Urging Agency to Take Necessary Steps to Tackle Opioid Epidemic 

In the letter, lawmakers call on FDA to include medications for opioid use disorder on its list of essential medicines, a step that would make more life-saving treatments readily available in medical facilities across the country 

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, along with Senators Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Angus King (I-Vt.), and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), led a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urging the agency to include Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), specifically buprenorphine and methadone, in its List of Essential Medicines, an action that would significantly help health care providers address the ongoing opioid epidemic.

NMSU Wind Symphony chosen to perform at regional conference

For the first time since 2010, a New Mexico State University band has been selected to perform at the College Band Directors National Association Southwestern regional conference later this month. Every two years, college concert bands from the Southwest region are chosen to perform by peer review.

NMSU’s Wind Symphony will perform during the association’s conference in Kansas City from Feb. 28 to March 2. Colleges from New Mexico, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah also will attend.

Members of NMSU’s Wind Symphony are selected through an audition process.

Lead counsel for Rep. Miguel P. Garcia issues statement on denial of petition

The state Supreme Court today issued an order denying a petition for a writ of mandamus in a challenge to line-item vetoes in a tax measure (House Bill 547) passed by the Legislature in 2023. The case is S-1-SC-40091, State of New Mexico v. Lujan Grisham. Click here for a copy of the order.

Mr. Candelaria, lead counsel for Petitioner Rep. Miguel P. Garcia, issues the following statement in response to today's one paragraph Order from the Supreme Court:

"My client respects the Court's judgment. The single paragraph Order the Supreme Court issued today, however, does not explain the Court's rationale for denying our client's request to overturn Governor Lujan Grisham's line-item vetoes to the Legislature's 2023 omnibus tax bill.

Traffic Alert NM 26 Bridge Rehabilitation

HATCH - The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office in cooperation with La Calerita LLC (Contractor) has begun a bridge rehabilitation project on NM 26 at milepost 47.7 over Interstate 25. 

During this time, the bridge over the Interstate 25 will have intermittent closures at exit 41(Hatch).  Eastbound NM 26 traffic to Northbound I-25 will need to follow the detours signage to Rincon. Travel lanes along I-25 may be reduced to a single lane depending on the work location, drivers should be vigilant for construction signing.
