DEMING New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) works closely with the National Weather Service during the monsoon months, during this period, New Mexico experiences more rain and severe weather making travel difficult.Rainstorms in New Mexico can become severe quickly, so stay tuned to weather forecasts when planning your trip.

If you plan to visit the Gila National Forest for the Fourth of July holiday, pack your camping essentials, don't forget the s'mores, and leave the fireworks at home. All Gila Forest Service offices will be closed on July 4, and regular business hours will resume on Friday, July 5.

Slash pile burning further reduces future fire hazard after hand-cutting treatment
SILVER CITY, NM,July 1, 2024 The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District is preparing to burn slash piles near Little Walnut Road, with operations beginning as soon as July 1 while favorable weather persists. Recent precipitation has brought suitable conditions to burn the slash that was cut as part of a recent fuels reduction project. The slash piles are located near the southeast corner of Feeley Subdivision, north of Little Walnut Road, along Forest Road 506.
Prescribed fire will burn slash piles north of Highway 35 west of North Star Road
MIMBRES, NM, July 1, 2024 – The Gila National Forest, Wilderness Ranger District is preparing to implement the 74-acre New Mexico Highway 35 Bravo prescribed fire project to burn slash piles. The project will occur in stages, beginning as early as July 8 and proceeding through the end of August as weather and fuels conditions and resource availability permit.
