The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, is studying ways to improve the long-term safety and resilience of U.S. 180 where it crosses the Gila River near Cliff. Flooding, shifting river channels, sediment buildup, and wildfire impacts have caused repeated damage and temporary road closures along this important transportation corridor. The study is exploring nature-based and sustainable solutions to restore the river channel while protecting the highway, nearby properties, and important wildlife habitat.

The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society is pleased to announce its winter film series, which will run every Thursday evening from January 8th through April 2nd .   The series is titled "Time to Laugh: Classic Hollywood Comedies 1959 to 1993", and will feature such iconic comedy performers  as Jack Lemmon, Peter Sellers, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Steve Martin and the Monty Python group.

Light Art Space is pleased to participate in the Silver City Red Dot Weekend at the Galleries with a reception for two new exhibitions. In the North Gallery, Silver City artist Richard Harper presents Mystery of the Sphere, oil paintings that are often described as imaginary landscapes. The Flash Gallery features The Colors of Light, photographs by San Lorenzo artist Robert Alfred Brooks.

Local playwright Brenda McFarlane will premiere her new one-woman comedy Dog Gone this April at the historic El Sol Theatre in downtown Silver City.

Performed by Silver City actor Hallie Harris, the 60-minute play follows Alice, a woman who heads north after a fight and keeps driving until somewhere in the Arizona desert she loses her dog. What begins as a search for the missing animal turns into an unexpected journey involving animal control, desert encounters, and a woman forced to confront the gap between the life she has and the life she longs for.

Marine Corps League, Gaffney-Oglesby Detachment #1328 will hold its regular meeting, as they do each First Saturday of the month, unless circumstances require changing the date. In midlife she changed direction to study the world's faith traditions and mythologies in seminary. She has served as a hospital chaplain and congregational clergy. Rev. Local playwright Brenda McFarlane will premiere her new one-woman comedy Dog Gone this April at the historic El Sol Theatre in downtown Silver City.

Would you like to learn more about the importance of community/citizen science projects, biodiversity in our region, and how to use the iNaturalist app? Then this event is for you! Join us for a hands-on demonstration of how to use the iNaturalist app on iPhone and Android, as well as an overview of how to upload images directly to the iNaturalist website. 

We'll practice taking photos and sound recordings with the app and identifying observations to the correct taxonomic level. We'll also discuss how to tag photos with accurate location and timestamp information and how to use the app in offline mode.

Pit Stop Challenge: 10:00 a.m., Old James Stadium. Teams must perform "pit stop" tasks on their race carts simulating the pressure they'll face during the actual race.

Soccer Match: 3:00 p.m., WNMU Football Field. Standard tournament format that often determines the leaderboard standings heading into Saturday.
