TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, NM, June 13, 2024 The Gila National Forest, Black Range Ranger District began implementing the Highway 59 thinning project today, Thursday, June 13. The work zone is along the roadside from milepost 3 at the forest boundary on New Mexico Highway 59 to the Forest Service Beaverhead Work Center at milepost 30.
"This project has been in the works for the past year between the Black Range District and some of our local and state partners. We are glad to finally begin and are looking forward to seeing the progress we make in the next couple of weeks," said Black Range District Ranger Bret Mellott. "Members of the public are asked to be conscious of their environment while traveling on Highway 59 and be on the lookout for our team out there completing the work."
Evidencing a growing movement among New Mexico's counties, the Catron County Commission officially adopted a resolution Wednesday, petitioning the New Mexico Legislature to call for a convention of the states under Article V of the US Constitution. Their action came one day after Otero County took a similar position.
Commenting on the federal government's wildly out of control spending and jurisdictional excesses, Commission Chairman Buster Green stated, "Our Legislature must step up to address the need for amendments to impose fiscal restraint, limitations on federal overreach, and term limits."
See flyer below for upcoming volunteer meeting for the Red Paint Pow Wow and Indian Market.
Western New Mexico University will host a Basic Economic Development course on campus July 14-18. The course provides one week of intensive training on how to select the right combination of strategies to cost-effectively create jobs in New Mexican communities. The course is open to municipal and county managers and department directors, tribal leaders, community planners and developers, and others interested in community job creation in New Mexico.
Saturday, June 15th from 9 am 12 pm at Grant County Community Foundation parking lot
Calling all volunteers! You're invited to join Silver City's Pick It Up Toss No Mas for ourÂ
June Community Cleanup, Saturday, June 15th, 2024.Â
Gather your friends and family and help us work to keep Silver City clean and beautiful! Meet us at the Grant County Community Foundation parking lot from 9 am to 12 pm as we come together to clean up our beloved town. Join us for a day of positive action, lots of fun, and some amazing community bonding. Together, we can make a significant impact on our local environment and our community!
Volunteers should meet at the Grant County Community Foundation parking lot located at 1106 N Pope St in Silver City, at 9 am on Saturday, June 15th. Grab your supplies, including trash bags, gloves, trash pickers, snacks, and free t-shirts for new volunteers.
Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes and bring a hat, water bottle, and sunscreen. Children 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Families with younger children are encouraged to clean up litter in their neighborhood, local parks or waterways as children under 12 are not permitted on state highways for the cleanup.
Thank you to the New Mexico Department of Transportation for hauling the collected trash to the landfill. Recyclables will be recycled with Silver City Recycles.
Check out the Pick It Up-Toss No Mas website www.silvercitytossnomas.org to sign up to volunteer and to learn about litter prevention opportunities, the business pledge program, Adopt-A-Roadway or Waterway program, and solid waste disposal and recycling resources.
Volunteers are the foundation of the Pick It Up Toss No Mas program. Since October 2021, over 780 volunteers have picked up over 22,717 pounds of litter, debris, and recyclables from Highways 180 and 90, Silver City neighborhoods, Big Ditch Park and San Vicente Creek.
Community members can also adopt a roadway or waterway to take care of and clean up throughout the year. On top of that, Pick It Up Toss No Mas can provide guidance for those who would like to put on their own clean up event, helping to supply the trash pickers, trash bags and gloves for your event.
Pick It Up Toss No Mas community cleanup events are sponsored by the Town of Silver City, New Mexico Clean and Beautiful, Silver City Watershed Keepers, Silver City Recycles, Silver City MainStreet, SWNMACT, Southwest Solid Waste Authority, Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce, and New Mexico Department of Transportation's Toss No Mas Program.
